American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier Group Inc. (ARC), a leading in U.S.-flag roll-on roll-off shipping and major government transportation provider, has integrated Starlink satellite internet technology across its entire fleet of American-flagged ships.
The installation aims to boost connectivity for mariners at sea, enabling them to maintain contact with their families and friends.
“This new technology allows ARC’s crews to maintain contact with family and friends ashore while delivering for the U.S. government,” said Eric Ebeling, ARC President & CEO.
Earlier this year, Overseas Shipholding Group became the first U.S. operator to announce a similar move with an agreement to install Starlink satellite internet service across its entire fleet of Jones Act and US-flagged ships.
Starting in early 2023, ARC began the process of integrating Starlink into its ships, concluding with its newest vessel, M/V ARC Honor, in February of this year.
Improving satellite communications across the entire ARC fleet will not only enhance the wellbeing of seafarers, but also boost security and communication on the vessels.
Seafarers International Union (SIU) Communications Director Jordan Biscardo, applauded the move, stressing that Wi-Fi has become a necessity for many mariners at this point. “Improving seafarer quality of life is a priority and we are glad to see that ARC is making improvements like adding Starlink to the ships they are working on,” he said.
